Alba Berlin has made a surprising move, departing the EuroLeague to compete in the Basketball Champions League (BCL) starting in the 2025-26 season. The decision raises questions about whether this reflects a broader shift in European basketball, especially with the NBA’s announced entry into the continent. The NBA aims to establish a club in Germany’s capital, and the BCL champion will reportedly gain direct entry into this new competition. Bayern Munich remains Germany’s sole EuroLeague representative.
“Joining the Champions League marks an exciting new chapter as we adapt to the evolving landscape of European basketball,” said Alba’s general manager Marco Baldi. “We have a long EuroLeague tradition, but the conditions for securing a spot have drastically changed. With our values—focused on financial sustainability, collaboration, and sport development—we aim to shape the future of European basketball. We’re confident that FIBA-led competitions will grow significantly in the coming years.”
Alba has long operated differently from most EuroLeague clubs, prioritizing youth development over immediate results. BCL CEO Patrick Comninos welcomed Alba warmly: “Alba’s entry is a milestone as we approach our tenth season. Berlin is a key market for our vision, and Alba brings tradition, achievements, a state-of-the-art arena, and a vibrant youth program. We’re proud to welcome Germany’s most successful club to our family.”
